College Roundup : Titans Face Stanford in Baseball

Stanford, the two-time National Collegiate Athletic Assn. defending baseball champions, travels to Cal State Fullerton to open a three-game series tonight at 7 on Titan Field.

The series continues Saturday at 1 p.m. and concludes Sunday at 5:05 p.m. The Sunday game will be televised live on ESPN. It will be the first nationally televised game from Titan Field.

The teams split six games last season. Fullerton took two of three at Stanford early in the season but Stanford took two of three from Fullerton in the College World Series.

In the world series last June, Fullerton beat Stanford, 5-3, but the Cardinal came back to beat the Titans, 4-1, and, 9-5, and eliminate Fullerton. Stanford went on to defeat Arizona State to win the title. Fullerton holds a 12-11 lead in the series.

Danny DeVille will pitch Friday for Fullerton (1-1) against Stan Spencer. Fullerton’s Huck Flenner faces Ben Keyser Saturday and Paul Johnson pitches against Mike Mussina Sunday. Stanford is 3-3.

Rex Peters, Fullerton’s senior first baseman, hit .385 with two doubles and two RBIs last season against Stanford.

Sunny Hills High School volleyball standout Marissa Hatchett has signed a national letter of intent to play at UCLA, the college announced Thursday.

Hatchett, who is a 6-foot-1 middle blocker, was the Southern Section 3-A player of the year as well as the Freeway League player of the year last fall.
