Tennis Roundup : Lendl Rallies Past Mayotte to Advance to Chicago Final
Ivan Lendl, ranked No. 1 in the world, rallied from double match point Saturday night to score a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 semifinal victory over fourth-seeded Tim Mayotte in the $350,000 Volvo Chicago tennis tournament.
Lendl took advantage of Mayotte’s inability to keep the ball in play after rolling to a 6-4 first-set victory and 5-1 lead in the second set.
Lendl advanced to today’s final against sixth-seeded Brad Gilbert of Piedmont, Calif., who outlasted Argentina’s Horacio de la Pena, 6-1, 6-4.
Top-ranked Steffi Graf of West Germany defeated ninth-ranked Zina Garrison of Houston, 6-2, 7-5, at the Euro-America’s Cup team tennis tournament at Auburn Hills, Mich.
Sixth-ranked Manuela Maleeva beat fifth-ranked Pam Shriver, 6-3, 6-2, to clinch the team tournament championship for Europe.
Second-seeded Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland and seventh-seeded Anders Jarryd of Sweden won semifinal matches in Nabisco Grand Prix tennis championships at Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Hlasek defeated third-seeded Yannick Noah of France, 7-6, 6-2, and Jarryd beat sixth-seeded Australian Darren Cahill, 6-2, 6-4. Hlasek will play Jarryd today.
