4-AA DIVISION

3-A DIVISION

San Luis Obispo 56, Notre Dame 49--Brian Jones scored 24 points and Ken Hicks added 18 but Notre Dame (17-9) was eliminated from the playoffs in a game dominated by defense. 2-AA DIVISION

Whittier Christian 80, Bell-Jeff 52--Five players fouled out for host Bell-Jeff, which finished the season with three losses in its last four games.

Whittier Christian, with four players scoring in double figures, shocked Bell-Jeff, which finished second in the San Fernando Valley League. But Bell-Jeff Coach Joe Dunn was even more shocked by the officiating.

“In all my years of coaching,” Dunn said, “I’ve never had five players foul out.”

Ray Witt, Nick Sanderson, Chris Dyer and Greg Dunn--all starters--and reserve Matt Corse all fouled out in the fourth quarter for Bell-Jeff.

The Guards (20-5) were whistled for 39 fouls to Whittier Christian’s 13. The Heralds attempted 51 free throws, Bell-Jeff only 13.

“They were a good team,” Dunn said. “But 51-13? Let’s get serious. Every time I turned around they were going to the free-throw line.”

And sinking the shots, too. The Heralds (20-6) converted 20 of 28 free throws in the fourth quarter and outscored Bell-Jeff, 35-19, to pull away.

Sanderson scored 12 points to lead Bell-Jeff.
