SOUTHERN SECTION 5-A BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Capistrano Valley Snaps Out of Its Cold Spell
Capistrano Valley High School overcame a cold-shooting third quarter to defeat Diamond Bar, 64-54, in the second round of the Southern Section 5-A playoffs Friday at Saddleback College.
Bill Mazurie made two free throws to give Capistrano Valley a 36-23 lead in the opening minute of the third quarter. The Cougars (21-4) then missed 10 consecutive field-goal attempts to allow Diamond Bar to take a 38-36 lead with 23 seconds left in the quarter.
Capistrano Valley’s only field goal of the quarter was scored on an offensive rebound by Andy Bosma with one second left in the quarter to tie the score, 38-38.
The Cougars came back in the fourth quarter to outscore the Brahmas (12-12), 26-16. Mazurie scored 10 points in the quarter, eight on free throws.
Mazurie finished with 20 points. Scott McCorkle led all scorers with 22 points for the Cougars.
Gary Hernando scored 14 points, Kirk Warren 12 and Troy Clark 10 for Diamond Bar.
