Community College Roundup : Fullerton’s 7-Run Sixth Beats Butte

Fullerton College rallied for seven runs in the sixth inning and went on to defeat Butte, 8-6, Friday in the first round of the Modesto Tournament.

Trailing, 5-0, Fullerton loaded the bases with no one out in the sixth. John Connolly singled in the first run. . Willie Speakman singled in two more runs, then Russ Barnes singled to reload the bases before Robby Bailey doubled to the right-field corner to score three and give Fullerton a 6-5 lead. John Mele doubled to score Bailey.

Trevor Painton, working in relief, got the victory for Fullerton (2-4).

In the King’s River Tournament:

Cypress 10, San Diego Mesa 6--Doug Yates had three hits, including a three-run home run in the second inning for host Cypress (7-3). Steve Gill had three hits and John Gerringer and Mitch Kaylor had two hits each for Cypress. Dennis Burbank (3-1) allowed six hits and had eight strikeouts and seven walks for Cypress.

In the Casey Stengel Tournament:

Cerritos 16, Rancho Santiago 9--Rancho Santiago’s Conrad Colby had three hits and John Hefler had two hits and three RBIs as the Dons were eliminated. Rancho Santiago (6-4) won the tournament last season. Marty Neff also had three hits, including two doubles for Rancho Santiago, which had lost to Pima (Arizona), 5-4, earlier Friday.

In nonconference softball:

Rancho Santiago 8, Long Beach 1--Natalie Sanchez (4-2) threw a two-hitter, striking out two, to lead the Dons (4-2) at Rancho Santiago. LaTania Trotter had a two-run triple in the fourth inning for the Dons.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Golden West 5, Cerritos 4--No. 1 singles Rob Lucas defeated Adrian Pina, 6-1, 6-2, and No. 2 singles Steve Arnott defeated Ahn Ngyuen, 6-1, 6-4, to lead Golden West (1-2) at home. Lucas and Arnott, playing No. 1 doubles, also paired to defeat Ngyuen and Jimmy Ngyuen, 6-4, 6-2.
