San Diego St. Women Fall To Fullerton

Sheryl Jones made six free throws in the last 3 minutes 22 seconds as visiting Cal State Fullerton withstood a San Diego State rally to win, 71-65, in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game.

SDSU outscored Cal State Fullerton, 20-6, over the last 5:22. Julie Evans led SDSU with 16 points, and Angelica Jackson added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Gena Miller had 24 points and 11 rebounds for Cal State Fullerton.

Sonya Carter’s 27 points led U.S. International University to a 68-54 nonconference victory over host University of San Diego.

For the Toreras, Candida Echeverria had 12 points and set a single-season school record for free throws with 100 with two free throws on Monday. Fonda DeCree and Vanessa Johnson added 20 and 13 points, respectively, for the Gulls. USIU improved to 8-16; USD dropped to 11-15.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Host South Dakota defeated U.S. International University, 106-103, breaking USIU’s three-game winning streak. USIU (11-15), which had won four of its last five games, scored more than 100 points for the fifth time in its last six games.

MEN’S TENNIS

Mark Farren defeated Tim Frefenius, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 1 singles and teamed with Chris Toomey to defeat Frefenius and Alex Havrilenko, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to lead the University of San Diego over visiting Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 9-0, in a nonconference match. USD is 7-1.

Air Force defeated host Point Loma Nazarene, 8-1, in a nonconference match. Hans Hoegstedt and Jeff Finger won at No. 1 doubles for Point Loma Nazarene (0-4).
