The state Department of Fish and Game has dropped plans to round up 200 pronghorn antelope in Northeast California and transfer them to new homes in the Central Coast region. Cold weather and snow “may be giving the antelope all the stress they can handle,” said Paul Wertz, information officer of the department’s regional headquarters in Redding. Biologists who checked the herds in Modoc County said the cold weather in January had made the antelope more vulnerable than normal to the stress of capture and transfer. Nighttime temperatures in Modoc County plunged as low as 35 degrees below zero Fahrenheit last month.
