Community College Roundup : Fullerton Powers Past Cerritos for 9-2 Victory

Fullerton College used three home runs to defeat Cerritos, 9-2, in a nonconference baseball game at Fullerton Tuesday.

John Mele, a sophomore catcher, hit a two-run home run during a four-run first for Fullerton (4-6). Russ Barnes had three hits, including a solo home run, and Mike Segovia also hit a solo homer for Fullerton.

Cerritos falls to 10-2 with the loss.

Mark Rogers (1-1) pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief for the victory. He struck out three and allowed two hits. Trevor Painton pitched the final three innings for his first save.

In other nonconference games:

Golden West 12, Los Angeles Harbor 9--Robb Carabba had two doubles, a triple and three RBIs to lead Golden West (5-3) at home. Dave Westman had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs and Dan Villegas had two hits and an RBI also for Golden West, which had 13 hits.

Toby Foreman pitched 8 2/3 innings to get the victory.

Southwestern 6, Rancho Santiago 4--Southwestern scored two runs off Willie Navarrette in the top of the ninth to break a 4-4 tie. It was the first college loss for Navarrette, a sophomore left-hander, who was 11-0 last season. Navarrette (1-1) walked six batters, and three scored. Rancho Santiago (6-5) tied the score, 4-4, on a solo home run by John McTaggart in the fifth. Ed Renteria had two doubles and a single for Rancho Santiago.

Cypress 6, Arizona State JV 2--Jason Friedman had three hits and three RBIs and Mike Neal had two hits and two RBIs for visiting Cypress (11-4). Ron Brown pitched the first five innings for the victory.

Saddleback 6, El Camino 3--Matt Dahlgren hit a three-run home run for host Saddleback (5-1).

In nonconference women’s softball:

Rancho Santiago College 4, Citrus 3--Rancho Santiago scored runs in the bottom of the seventh at home. The Dons (5-2) loaded the bases with two outs and Natalie Sanchez and LaTania Trotter walked to force in the winning run.

Cypress 7, College of the Desert 0--Colleen Moore allowed only a hit in the first four innings for host Cypress. Alisha Bokano had three hits and scored two runs and Rose Ferrante and Karen Kuypers had two RBIs each for Cypress.

Orange Coast 1, College of the Canyons 0--Sindy Rice reached second on a throwing error, went to third on a single by Kellie Newcombe and scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning for host Orange Coast (5-2).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Cypress 8, Pasadena 1--Eric Glade won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, and combined with Moses Kim to win at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-2, for host Cypress (3-0).

Rancho Santiago 8, Citrus 1--Omar Sary won at No. singles, 6-1, 7-6, and Alex Venidis won at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0, for host Rancho Santiago.
