Community Colleges : Fullerton Women Win Playoff Opener

Angie Nelson scored 16 points to lead Fullerton College to a 94-58 victory over Antelope Valley in the first round of the Southern California Regional women’s basketball playoff game Wednesday at Fullerton.

Fullerton, the top-ranked team in Southern California and No. 1-seeded team in the playoffs, opened a 16-4 lead after 3 1/2 minutes. Fullerton led, 49-24, at the half.

Steffi Strauss scored 15, Kelli Johnson 14, Heidi Shikoma 13 and Viv Perez and Debbie Wagner 12 each for Fullerton (25-1), which has won 15 in a row.

Fullerton plays host to Long Beach Saturday for a berth in the state tournament.

In another regional playoff game:

Golden West 110, El Camino 83--Kim Wilson scored 27 points as Golden West (13-16) won at home. Lori Totosz added 15 for Golden West, which opened a 16-2 lead on the way to a 63-30 halftime lead. Golden West plays host to Santa Barbara Friday.

In nonconference baseball:

Orange Coast 11, Long Beach 4--Hector Santa Cruz had four hits and scored three runs for host OCC (10-2-1). Jason Young had two triples, scored two runs and had two RBIs, Eddie Pierce had three hits and scored two runs and Marty Cordova had three hits and four RBIs for OCC. Ryan Thibault pitched 8 1/3 innings for the victory.

In nonconference softball:

Cypress 3, Mt. San Antonio 0--Sally Dugas pitched a four-hitter and also had two hits and an RBI for host Cypress (4-2). Dugas is 2-0. Cypress’ Rose Ferrante had a single to extend her hitting streak to six games.

Golden West 2, El Camino 0--Tammie Flores pitched a four-hitter for the Rustlers (5-2) at Golden West. Flores (2-2) struck out seven and walked three. Gretchen Boch doubled home two runs for Golden West in the sixth.

In South Coast Conference volleyball:

Golden West 3, Mt. San Antiono 0--Doug Partis had 13 kills to lead visiting Golen West to a 15-6, 15-2, 15-8 victory.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Saddleback 9, San Diego Mesa 0--Carl Hinds won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4, to lead host Saddleback, the defending state champions and the top-ranked team in the state this season. Ed Peregrino won, 6-4, 6-4, in singles for Saddleback (4-0).

Cypress 5, Cerritos 4--The match was tied, 4-4, but Cypress’ No. 3 doubles team of Robert Chan and Todd Morrison won, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, to win the match. Cypress is 4-0.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Golden West 6, Grossmont 3--Eileen Robertson defeated Wanda Yocom, 6-4, 6-1, to lead Golden West (2-0) at Grossmont.
