High School Roundup : Montclair Prep Whips Webb, 23-2

Montclair Prep pitcher Kelly Kramer hurled a complete game and hit a grand slam in the first inning in a 23-2 victory over Webb in a nonleague softball game Friday at Webb.

Kramer struck out nine batters in just five innings. Maria Cicone, who had two hits and four runs batted in, added a solo home run to lead off the second inning.

Webb committed eight errors. The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

In other softball games:

Chaminade 4, Canyon 1--Kathy Regan pitched a four-hitter and had two hits and drove in a run as the Eagles won a nonleague opener for both teams at Chaminade. Carla Coppa doubled home two runs in a three-run sixth inning for Chaminade.

Bell-Jeff 11, Maranatha 1--The Guards scored at least one run in each of the first six innings in a nonleague opener at Maranatha.

Simi Lutheran 18, Villanova 3--Donna Schultze pitched a no-hitter through four innings and also had three hits and three RBIs in the nonleague game at Simi Lutheran. The Barons drew 20 walks from Villanova pitchers. The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Harvard d. Brentwood, 15-10, 15-8, 15-11--Sophomore Mark Shoptaw had 15 kills and Andres Carlo added 11 kills and eight blocks as the Saracens scored a mild upset in a a nonleague season-opening match at Brentwood.

The Saracens are ranked sixth in the Southern Section 3-A Division preseason poll. Brentwood is ranked second.

Campbell Hall d. Bosco Tech 15-7, 15-8, 15-12--Will Frueling had 11 kills and teammate Don White added 10 for Campbell Hall in a Camino Real League opener at Campbell Hall.

Setter Ty Leatherman had 18 assists for Campbell Hall (2-0 overall, 1-0 in league play). Bosco Tech is 0-1 overall.
