Prep Baseball Roundup : Kennedy Sweeps Past Magnolia

Steve Lundby singled to left-center in the ninth inning of the second game to help Kennedy High School to a 4-2 victory over Magnolia and a sweep of a nonleague doubleheader Tuesday at Glover Stadium. Kennedy won the first game, 6-1.

Jody Clark of Magnolia had hit a two-run home run in the fifth to tie the score, 2-2. Magnolia had a chance to take the lead in the sixth, but Kennedy right fielder Don Cochran threw a Magnolia player out at the plate. Greg Hansell pitched the final six innings for Kennedy (5-2).

In the first game, Peter Montera pitched a complete game for his third victory and hit a two-run home run. Teammate Steve Rath had two hits and scored twice, and Scott Walker added three RBIs with two hits. Magnolia is 3-6.

In other nonleague baseball:

Laguna Beach 11, Capistrano Valley Christian 2--Clark Carman pitched a three-hitter for host Laguna Beach. Carmen also had three hits, including two doubles. Jason Levinson had two hits including a home run and three RBIs.

Irvine 5, Mater Dei 1--David Goldstein (3-1) pitched a two-hitter for host Irvine, which scored three runs in the second inning. Mater Dei is 5-2.

Servite 5, Esperanza 5 (seven innings, darkness)--Esperanza scored three runs in the seventh inning to tie host Servite. Steve Sandoval had three hits and two RBIs and Whit Haydon added two hits and an RBI for Servite (5-2-1).

Fountain Valley 2-14, Millikan 5-6--Mark Dodd hit three doubles in three at-bats for four RBIs to lead visiting Fountain Valley (4-3) to a second-game victory and a split of the doubleheader. Fountain Valley’s Steve Grack had six hits and two RBIs in the doubleheader, and teammate Steve Montgomery had three RBIs and three hits, including a triple.

Katella 4-1, Foothill 0-3--Katella pitchers allowed Foothill just five hits in the two games, but Foothill earned a split at Boysen Park by scoring two unearned runs in the second game.

In the first game, Katella starter Danny Kiker allowed two hits over three innings and reliever Billy Fitzgerald held visiting Foothill hitless over the last four innings. Fitzgerald also knocked in the first two runs with a fourth-inning triple.

In the second game, Katella pitcher Jim Rosas struck out eight and allowed one earned run in five innings, but Foothill (4-2) won with only three hits. Katella (3-4) had four hits in the second game.

Bonita 7, Claremont 3--Starting pitcher Chris Romero earned his third victory of the season for Bonita (4-1), allowing one run in four innings at Claremont. Teammate Diego Galvez knocked in two runs, while Brian Phillips added an RBI and scored once.

Rancho Alamitos 6, Mayfair 3--Tim Mora hit a grand slam in the third inning for host Rancho Alamitos (4-1). Starter Brian Flanagan gave up two hits over five innings en route to the victory.

Valencia 6, El Modena 2--Rudy Lopez had two hits and an RBI for Valencia (4-1). Reliever Ken Lorge got the save, striking out three and holding visiting El Modena (2-5) scoreless over two innings.

Westminster 5-2, Lakewood 4-8--Westminster (5-2) handed host Lakewood (6-1) its first defeat of the season in the first game, but lost the second game. In the opener, pitcher Brett Grebe (3-0) pitched a complete game. Jim Slagle drove in the go-ahead run with a triple in the fifth inning for Westminster.

La Quinta 5-5, Dana Hills 3-3--Left-handed starters Corey Giuliano and Jon Corzen pitched complete games for La Quinta. Jason Parson of La Quinta (5-2-1) hit two home runs and had a triple to drive in six runs in the two games.

Brea-Olinda 9-1, Walnut 6-2--Mike Ryan had three RBIs on three hits in the first game for visiting Brea-Olinda (4-4). Walnut is 2-3.
