Softball Roundup : Huntington Beach Edges St. Paul

Shannen Kreipl and Tara Snyder hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the seventh inning Thursday to give Huntington Beach High School a 4-3 victory over St. Paul in a first-round 5-A Division game of the Canyon Softball Tournament of Champions.

Sasha Kyle led off Huntington Beach’s seventh inning with a walk. Kreipl’s two-run homer with one out tied the game at three and Snyder’s homer gave the Oilers (2-2) the lead.

In the tournament’s 4-A Division:

Woodbridge, 1 Pacifica 0--Woodbridge (4-1) had one run, four hits and four errors. Jennifer Surface threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded to score Woodbridge’s Tami Williams in the fifth inning. Alisha Nelson (1-1) pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts for Woodbridge.

Kennedy 6, Hawthorne 0--Cheryl Longeway (4-1) pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts for Kennedy (5-1). The Fighting Irish scored three runs in the first inning on three hits and two errors. Hawthorne is 4-2.

Rolling Hills 3, Los Amigos 2--Los Amigos (0-4) committed seven errors in the loss. Rolling Hills is 3-1.

In Sea View League softball:

Tustin 26, Newport Harbor 1--Tanya McGuire went four for five and had five RBIs, and Jayne Ondracek struck out eight batters and had three hits for Tustin in the league opener for both schools at Newport Harbor (1-3).

University 11, Corona del Mar 1--Sophomore first baseman Liz Dale went three for three with two home runs and two RBIs to lead University (5-1, 1-0) in the league opener.

In nonleague softball:

Connelly 12, Claremont 0--Santina Delligatta hurled a shutout for host Connelly (1-1), striking out 10.

El Toro 3, Capistrano Valley 2 (8 innings)--Jennifer Jourden (3-1) pitched a one-hitter for El Toro (7-2) and Karie Yoshioka drove in the winning run with a single to center in the top of the eighth in the Laguna Hills tournament.

Fountain Valley 1, La Quinta 0--Janet Miyahara tossed a four-hit shutout for Fountain Valley (6-1-1). Kami Bigler singled home the only run in the fourth inning.

Fullerton 3, Esperanza 2 (8 innings)--Catcher Cheryl Lamka tripled to lead off the top of the eighth, then scored what turned out to be the winning run on a fielder’s choice when Benna Kennedy grounded to shortstop in a game at Esperanza (3-6). Fullerton is 4-5.

Rosary 2, Brea Olinda 0--Pitcher Jennifer Salazar (1-2) allowed two hits and had nine strikeouts and no walks to get her first victory for Rosary (2-2).

Sunny Hills 3, El Dorado 2--Erin McKenney hit a solo home run in the second inning and drove in the tying run in Sunny Hills’ two-run sixth inning. McKenney also scored the go-ahead run on a double by Amy Huett. Sunny Hills is 3-2. El Dorado is 4-3.
