Ed O’Bannon of Artesia, a junior being recruited by 150 colleges, leads The Times’ 1989 boys All-Southeast High School Basketball Team.
O’Bannon averaged 28.9 points a game and also made Parade magazine’s All-American team.
Whittier Christian, which won the Southern Section 2-AA championship, placed Paul McKinley and Scott Ferguson on the team. There are also two players, Greg Willig and Jason Hart, from St. Paul.
The girls’ All-Southeast team is led by sophomores Brenda Pantoja of Bell Gardens and Angelina Marin of Glenn, and junior Patrice Hall of Pius X.
Pantoja, whom coaches say already possesses Division I college skills, has been called one of the top sophomores in the state.
Marin and Hall are the team’s top scorers, with averages of 23.4 and and 22.7 points a game, respectively.
Bell Gardens and Downey each placed two players on the team. Jeanne Amos is the other Bell Gardens player. Shannon Hawkins and Heide Crammer made it from Downey.
Repeaters on the teams are O’Bannon and John Brown of Montebello, and Hall and Amos.
