Hawthorne’s 400-meter relay team of Chris Alexander, Anthony Smith, Eric Allen and Curtis Conway ran 40.66 Saturday in the Pasadena Games at Occidental College. The 1985 Cougar team set the state mark of 40.64 on the same track.

Through five games, senior catcher Richard Guilfore of Narbonne is hitting .765 (13 for 17) with two grand slams, six doubles and 18 RBIs. The first-year high school player has been a bright spot for the struggling Gauchos (2-3 in the Southern League).

El Camino College hitters struck out 11 times and Warrior pitchers gave up 14 hits Tuesday as Long Beach City College ran away with a 12-1 victory. The loss dropped El Camino into third place in the South Coast Conference with a 3-4 record.
