Perry Named to All-American Team

Chana Perry, a senior center on the San Diego State women’s basketball team, has been named to a the 10-player Kodak All-American team.

Perry is the first Aztec women’s player named to the first team.

Perry, Big West co-player of the year the past two seasons, averaged 23.5 points and 13.1 rebounds per game this season in leading the Aztecs to 25-9 record.

ICE HOCKEY

San Diego Surf Hockey begins play for the Pacific Southwest Hockey League championship tonight at 8 at the San Diego Ice Arena.

San Diego (20-0-1) and the Burbank Jets (6-14-1) play a two-out-of-three series that will continue Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 4:30 if needed.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC San Diego, ranked fifth in NCAA Division III, went to a tiebreaker in the final doubles set to pull out a 5-4 victory over No. 8 Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) in Phoenix.

Francois Monnar, Sig Huber, John Park and Jeff French won in singles for the Toreros. Monnar and French took their set in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles to give UCSD the win.

Bob Rump, in his 27th year as coach at Grossmont Community College, won his 500th match as his team routed visiting San Diego City College, 9-0.

Harvard (6-3) defeated host San Diego State (8-14), 5-2.

The Aztecs’ lone victories came at No. 1 singles, where Joe McDonough defeated Roger Berry, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, and No. 6 singles, where Bill Kearsley defeated Albert Chang, 6-3, 6-0.

University of San Diego was defeated by Auburn, 4-3, in the Blue Gray National Collegiate Tennis Classic at Montgomery, Ala.

USD plays Southern Methodist University today. Auburn is 18-5.

SOFTBALL

Host UCSD defeated Chico State, 3-2, led by Michelle Mundee, who was three for four, and Lynn Moreno, who was two for three. Kathy Fogg picked up the victory for UCSD (15-4). Chico State is 1-22.
