Prep Roundup : Laguna Beach Takes Care of Corona del Mar
Laguna Beach High School defeated Corona del Mar, 10-8, in a battle of two of the top Orange County boys’ tennis teams in a nonleague match Thursday at Laguna Beach.
Jon Leach, Laguna Beach’s No. 1 singles player, swept his sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1.
Rich Han and Doug Schulein, Corona del Mar’s No. 1 doubles team, swept their sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-0. Corona del Mar is 7-3, Laguna Beach is 6-1.
In Garden Grove League tennis:
Bolsa Grande 17, Garden Grove 1--The No. 2 doubles team of Vinh Nguyen and Jack Toan swept their sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-0, to lead host Bolsa Grande (7-2, 4-0).
In Sunset League tennis:
Huntington Beach 18, Ocean View 0--Andy Stewart, Huntington Beach’s No. 1 singles player, swept his sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, to lead the Oilers (6-5, 1-1).
In Garden Grove League badminton:
Kennedy 10, La Quinta 9--Jimmy Huang won his sets, 15-1, 15-5, and 15-1, 15-1, to lead visiting Kennedy.
In the Catholic school baseball tournament:
Mater Dei 6, Bishop Amat 4--Rob Ickes’ triple off the wall in the top of the seventh drove in the winning run and gave Mater Dei the championship.
Servite 6, Murphy 2--Blain Patriquin doubled in two runs in the first inning and singled in another in the fifth to lead Servite at home. Sophomore pitcher Cliff Mierendorf (2-0) pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight. Servite is 9-5-1.
In Sunset League baseball:
Marina 5, Westminster 3--Chad Terry had two RBIs and Chris Stevens (4-0) pitched three innings of hitless relief for host Marina. Marina is 8-5, 1-1. Westminster is 6-5, 0-2.
In Orange League golf:
Brea-Olinda 206, Western 230--Kevin Claborn shot a one-under 36 to lead Brea-Olinda at Imperial Golf Course.
In Sea View League golf:
Corona del Mar 192, University 204--Corona del Mar’s Jeff Tatch and Jonah Tatch each shot a one-over 36 in the league opener for both teams at Newport Beach Country Club.
In nonleague golf:
Edison 202, Los Amigos 234--Levi Kennedy and Matt Nichol each shot a two-over 38 to lead the Chargers (4-4) at Mile Square Park.
Estancia 196, Esperanza 218--At Mesa Verde Country Club, Ken Calver and Mike Joyner each shot a one-over 37 to lead Estancia (9-0).
Estancia JV 190, Fountain Valley 218--Estancia’s junior varsity improved its record to 10-0 at Costa Mesa Country Club.
In Garden Grove League softball:
Kennedy 1, La Quinta 0 (9 innings)--Missi Gyde singled home Kris Vucurevic in the ninth to give host Kennedy the victory.
Garden Grove 5, Bolsa Grande 1--Junior right-hander Stephanie Smith held Bolsa Grande to one hit and had two hits in three at-bats for Garden Grove (8-5, 2-0).
In nonleague softball:
Brea-Olinda 1, Foothill 0--Brea’s Sherry Fulbright singled to score Kelly Cook from third in the second inning for the game’s only run.
El Toro 4, Los Alamitos 3--Paige Lauby had three hits, including a game-winning single to center with two out in the bottom of the seventh for El Toro (11-5).
