Cockerill’s Team Wins Golf Pro-Am Competition

A team led by women’s golf pro Kay Cockerill of Los Gatos won the Maxell Ladies Pro-Am, a preliminary to the Red Robin Kyocera Inamori golf tournament on the LPGA Tour Monday at StoneRidge Country Club.

The winning team shot a 13-under-par 58, beating a team led by Lenore Rittenhouse of Honolulu by one stroke. Teams led by Kim Williams of Bethesda, Md., Heather Drew of Solana Beach and Lisa Walters of Tampa, Fla., were two shots back. Cockerill earned $1,000, Rittenhouse $600 and Williams, Drew and Walters $133.33 each.

Amateur members of the winning team were Wendy Modic, Susan Asmundson and Toni Nickell.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC San Diego held visiting Eastern Montana College scoreless in sweeping all three games, 15-0, 15-0, 15-0, in a nonconference match at Triton Gym.

John Lim and Tom McCutchen had seven and six kills, respectively, and John Lee had five service aces for the Tritons (4-14).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Tim Worrell, brother of St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Todd Worrell, pitched visiting Biola to a 9-1 victory over Point Loma Nazarene College in a nonconference game.

Bob Keller and Brett Thorsteinson hit three- and two-run home runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pace Biola (12-14-2).

Mark Ratekin hit a solo home run for the Crusaders’ only score. Point Loma (15-16) stranded 10 runners.

U.S. International scored runs in every inning of its 24-5 nonconference victory over Cal State Northridge at USIU.

Scott Coutts went three for five with a double, a two-run home run and four RBIs and Kevin Tahan was four for seven and doubled as the Gulls improved to 13-22.

Seven of USIU’s runs came on four home runs. Northridge dropped to 15-10.

FOOTBALL

University of Colorado quarterback Sal Aunese, who was diagnosed last week as having inoperable stomach cancer, is scheduled to start chemotherapy today at University Hospital in Denver. Aunese played at Vista High School. A fund has been set up to help offset the family’s expenses. It is being handled by The Buff Club, Campus Box 368, University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo., 80309.
