A 4.6 earthquake struck beneath Newport Beach this afternoon, injuring at least one man. The U.S. Geological Survey set the quake’s magnitude at 4.6 on the Richter Scale.

The quake occurred at 1:07 p.m. It was felt from downtown Los Angeles to San Diego, but the strongest jolts were experienced in Orange County.

Newport Beach police reported one report of minor injuries at RJ’s for Ribs restaurant, where a man was injured by cascading glass.

At a downtown Los Angeles hotel, a luncheon guest described the temblor as “a rolling motion that progressively gained strength. It started very light--just a jolt--and gradually got worse.”

The quake struck as the Southland was reeling under a siege of record-breaking heat for the fourth day.

Weather forecasters promised a gradual cooling trend but no real relief from searing desert winds.

By 1 p.m. the mercury in downtown Los Angeles and in Burbank had hit 100 degrees, far outstripping the 88 degree record set in 1962. Van Nuys reported a temperature of 97 at 1 p.m. The day’s highs were expected to be over 100 throughout much of the region. Thursday’s high downtown was 106, the hottest April day on record.
