Holt-Goodman Baseball Tournament : McMackin Leads Chatsworth to Title

Share

Two members of the McMackin family have played baseball at Chatsworth High, specializing in wrecking things for other teams. Rex, a 1988 graduate, is playing at Arizona State after blasting his way through two superlative seasons for the Chancellors.

Rex’s younger brother, Reed, the second of four McMackin offspring, has picked up where Rex left off and has even done his older brother one better by pitching. Reed, a junior right-hander, pitched a four-hitter in Chatsworth’s 14-1 win over Sylmar in the championship game of the Holt-Goodman baseball tournament Tuesday at Birmingham High.

With Sylmar leading, 1-0, in the second inning, McMackin (6-0) also had what proved to be the game-winning hit, a two-run home run. It landed a few feet from the scoreboard in left field, where Reed’s younger brother, 10-year-old Royal--who is perhaps the next link in the McMackin line--was posting numbers about as fast as humanly possible.

“He may be next,” Chatsworth Coach Bob Lofrano said of Royal. “But I don’t know about the fourth one. She’s only 2 years old.”

Reed McMackin allowed only four singles and struck out five to snap the Spartans’ eight-game win streak.

Chatsworth (15-2) scored a run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth before exploding for eight in the sixth.

Chatsworth third baseman Rich Aude, who was the wining pitcher in the tournament opener and won a second-round game with a three-run home run, was named tournament MVP. Aude was two for five against Sylmar and was one of seven Chancellor starters who hit safely in a 14-hit barrage.
