Lineman Brad Edwards Leaves SDSU Football

Brad Edwards, a 6-foot-5, 245-pound freshman defensive lineman, quit San Diego State’s football team Wednesday because of a fractured ankle he sufferedthis spring. It was the second such injury to Edwards in less than a year.

Steve Blyth, the senior center who ruptured a tendon in his right knee Tuesday, underwent surgery Wednesday and is expected to return in the fall.

GOLF

With a final-round 72, Kim Saiki of Redwood City won the Players West Golf Tour’s San Diego women’s tournament by a shot over Palm Desert’s Judy Furst at the Chula Vista Golf Club. Saiki won $950 with a two-round total of two-under-par 146. Furst earned $815 after shooting 75. Tari Gadbaw shot a closing 77 and finished at 151, tied with two others.

Grand Canyon College won the Point Loma Nazarene Golf Invitational at Rancho San Diego with a 596. The University of San Diego was second at 600. Individually, Eugene Burns of Loyola Marymount shot a two-under 142 for first.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge, the No. 1 team in Division II, swept a doubleheader from U.S. International, 3-2 and 1-0. Cindy Oliver took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for the Gulls (15-30-1) in the second game and finished with six strikeouts and one walk.

MEN’S TENNIS

Behind the play of No. 1 Jose Luis Noriega, the University of San Diego defeated San Diego State, 6-0, in a nonconference match at SDSU. The sixteenth-ranked Toreros improved to 24-6. Noriega defeated Joe McDonough 6-3, 7-6.

SIGNINGS

Coronado High School’s Rich Bledsoe has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Memphis State.
