Van Nuys 8, North Hollywood 6--Mike Engler had three hits and Richard Hanna, Hector Alvarenga, Keith Quigley and Carlos Bejines each had two hits for Van Nuys. Keith Quigley notched his second save by pitching two-thirds of an inning in relief of Elton Teng.

Scott Rogers had two singles for North Hollywood.

Poly 7, Birmingham 2 (9 innings)--Gabe Chavez hit a three-run double and Harold Whiteside had a two-run double to highlight a five-run ninth inning for Poly. Junior right-hander David Giatti went the distance, yielding seven hits.

Birmingham (5-11, 3-9) nearly won in the seventh, but with runners at the corners, Ruben Flores’ line drive was caught by third baseman Roy Lozano to force extra innings.

NORTHWEST VALLEY CONFERENCE

El Camino Real 8, Cleveland 6--The Conquistadores scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to win their fourth consecutive game.

With his team trailing, 6-5, Ryan McGuire reached base on an error to start the inning. Jason Cohen doubled, McGuire stopping at third, and Bobby Kim hit a sacrifice fly to center to tie the score. Del Marine singled to score Cohen with the winning run and Steve Smith tripled to score Marine.

Cohen had two doubles, a triple, three RBIs and scored two runs for El Camino Real (4-7, 4-7). Patrick Treend (2-3) pitched a four-hitter for the victory.

Taft 5, Granada Hills 2--Scott Tiano struck out five in six innings and Benji Belfield notched his fourth save for the host Toreadors.

Taft (12-9, 8-4) scored single runs in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Mike Kimelman was two for three but Glenn Nahmias was hitless in two at-bats, snapping a 15-game hitting streak.

Eric Clark was three for four for Granada Hills.

Kennedy 11, Canoga Park 3--Mike Murray hit a home run and a triple as Kennedy (16-5, 10-2) completed a sweep of the last-place Hunters (2-10). Lazaro Campos also homered for Kennedy.

Mitch Cizek (7-2) went the distance, striking out five and yielding five hits.

Doug Krieder was two for four and Jason Mitchell hit a triple for Canoga Park.

NORTHERN LEAGUE

Verdugo Hills 7, Belmont 0 (forfeit)--Trailing, 2-1, in the bottom of the second inning, Verdugo Hills was awarded the victory when Belmont Coach Tony Serpa was ejected from the Northern League game for unsportsmanlike conduct.

SOFTBALL

El Camino Real 26, Taft 1--Chrissy Peck came within two batters of pitching her second consecutive no-hitter as the Conquistadores (16-1, 8-0) cruised to a Northwest Valley Conference win.

Jenny Fleming was five for six, including three triples, and had six RBIs. Cathy Balint was three for four, including a home run.

Hart 2, Burbank 1--Kym Weil gave up her first earned run of the season but scattered three hits to win the Foothill League game at McCambridge Park in Burbank.

Burbank scored a run in the fourth to end Weil’s streak of 107 2/3 innings without an earned run.

Montclair Prep 9, Marshall Fundamental 1--Kelly Karmer pitched her second no-hitter in the Alpha League game.

Saugus 2, Burroughs (R) 0--Cathy Lewis pitched a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts and singled home one run to lead the Centurions (12-7, 4-1).

Thousand Oaks 5, Royal 0--Alicia Zinner pitched a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Thousand Oaks (18-4, 9-1) remained alone atop the Marmonte League standings. Marsha Bour was two for three with an RBI.

Granada Hills 9, Cleveland 8--Despite a triple by Bridgete Fisher and doubles by Amy Horst and Liz Lopez, host Cleveland dropped the Northwest Valley Conference game.

BOYS’ TRACK

Loyola 71 1/3, Crespi 55 2/3--Russell White won four events for Crespi, but Loyola’s superior depth made the difference in the Del Rey League finale at Loyola.

The win snapped Crespi’s 20-meet win streak as well as the Celts’ two-year reign as league champions.

Trailing, 55 1/3-48 2/3, with three events left, Crespi (6-1, 3-1) narrowed the deficit to 3 2/3 when White led a one-three Celt finish in the triple jump.

However, Loyola (7-0, 4-0) retaliated with a one-two finish in the 3,200 meters to clinch the win and added a victory in the 1,600 relay to end the meet.

White won the 100 in a wind-aided 10.5 seconds, the 200 in 21.5, the long jump at 21 feet, 9 inches and the triple jump at 47-8.
