Prep Softball Roundup : Capistrano Valley’s Jennifer Smith Pitches No-Hitter

Jennifer Smith pitched a no-hitter to lead Capistrano Valley High School to a 1-0 victory over San Clemente in a South Coast League softball game Friday at Capistrano Valley.

It was the second no-hitter this season for Smith, who also has five one-hitters. She lost a perfect game on a fifth-inning error. Smith had six strikeouts.

Capistrano Valley scored in the seventh on three consecutive singles. With one out, Tobi Roquemore, Teresa Doesburg and Alyson Carpenter singled, scoring Roquemore with the winning run.

In other South Coast League games:

Mission Viejo 6, Dana Hills 0--Kerin Dull (5-1) pitched a one-hitter with four strikeouts for host Mission Viejo (13-7, 4-2), which scored four runs in the second. Kerry McDaniels had three hits and an RBI.

Irvine 4, El Toro 0--Jennifer Brundage (13-6) pitched a two-hitter, striking out six, for the Vaqueros (14-6, 5-1) at Irvine. Brundage also hit a two-run homer in the fourth.

In the Sunset League:

Ocean View 3, Fountain Valley 0--Marla Pickard pitched a one-hitter, striking out four for Ocean View (14-11, 3-3) at Fountain Valley. Pickard allowed only a sixth-inning single by Kristen Santa Cruz. The Seahawks took the lead in the second on a bases-loaded triple by Amy Tucker. Fountain Valley is 4-2 in league play.

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 9, University 2--Jayme Ondracek (7-1) pitched a two-hitter to lead host Tustin (12-7, 9-2), which clinched at least second place with two games left. Shannon Ellis tripled with the bases loaded to score three for University in the second. Ellis had four RBIs. Tustin trails first-place Saddleback by two games, but the teams play twice next week.

Saddleback 11, Corona del Mar 2--Catcher Kim Carstens and left fielder Amber Smith each went three for four with two runs batted and two runs scored to pace host Saddleback (21-2, 11-0). The Roadrunners, trailing, 2-1, going into the bottom of the fourth, broke the game open with six runs on six hits. Desi Abrego, who had no-hit Corona del Mar on Wednesday, pitched the final four innings for her 16th victory against two losses. Claudia Rodriguez, Saddleback’s starting pitcher Friday, had a bases-empty homer. Corona del Mar is 2-9 in league play.

In a nonleague game:

Kennedy 1, Woodbridge 0--Cheryl Longeway (13-3) pitched a two-hitter, striking out 14, for the Fighting Irish (16-4) at Kennedy. Missi Jyde hit a bases-empty homer for Kennedy in the second inning.
