College Roundup : Fullerton Salvages Split in Softball With 11-Inning Shutout

Amy Van Dortrecht pitched a two-hit, 11-inning shutout in the second game of a Big West Conference softball doubleheader Saturday, giving third-ranked Cal State Fullerton a split with 11th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona.

Debbie Hartwig hit a two-out single to score Nikki Lewis and Anjie Bryant in the top of the 11th inning and give the visiting Titans a 2-0 victory in the second game.

Lori Thompson, from Canyon High School, pitched a six-hit shutout in first game as the Broncos won, 4-0.

CSUF remained in first place at 25-7 in the Big West and 43-12 overall; Cal Poly Pomona is 35-20 and 21-11.

In Big West Conference women’s tennis:

Nevada Las Vegas 5, UC Irvine 4--The Rebels took four of six singles matches to defeat the Anteaters for third place in the Big West Conference Championships at Ojai. San Diego State won the championship with a 5-2 victory over UC Santa Barbara.

In Big West Conference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine, with finalists in seven of nine flights, leads the nine-team field after the second day of the Big West Conference Championships at Ojai. The Anteaters have 41 points to lead Long Beach State (36 points), Fresno State (35) and UC Santa Barbara (30).

In rowing:

Orange Coast College outpointed 12 other colleges Saturday in the 24th Newport Invitational Rowing Regatta at Newport Harbor’s North Lido Channel, co-hosted by Orange Coast and UC Irvine. Orange Coast crews won in the eight-man freshman and novice races, and totaled 24 team points. UCLA finished second with 23 points. UC Irvine was fourth.
