High School Roundup : Roberge Powers St. Francis to Win Over Pitching-Thin Notre Dame

J. P. Roberge hit two home runs and drove in six runs as St. Francis defeated Notre Dame, 19-14, in a nonleague game at Notre Dame on Monday.

Trailing, 9-2, after three innings, St. Francis scored four runs in the fourth inning, nine in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh to win.

Roberge gave St. Francis an 11-9 lead with a one-out grand slam in the fifth and, after Chris Muir walked, Gregg Zaun hit a two-run shot that gave the Golden Knights (10-6-1) a 13-9 lead.

The loss was the second in a row for Notre Dame (19-5), which lost to Lakewood, 4-1, in the championship game of the Redondo-Palos Verdes tournament on Saturday.

With sophomores Steve Colella and Cary Wichmann having pitched the previous two games, Notre Dame Coach Bob Mandeville was forced to go with a pitching lineup that included shortstop Oscar Macias, left fielder Chris Lohman, first baseman Kevin Milligan and second baseman Mickey McGuigan. The foursome was rocked for 19 hits.

Lohman and Chad Ratliff had three hits and two runs batted in for Notre Dame.

In another baseball game:

Bel-Air Prep 19, Grace Community 9--Cal Frost and Chad Hankinson had three hits each, but Grace Community was hammered by Bel-Air Prep in the nonleague game at Sherman Oaks Park.

Frost hit his third home run of the season--a two-run blast--in the seventh and had three RBIs for Grace Community (12-6).

Ronnie Jensen led Bel-Air Prep with four hits and five RBIs.

SOFTBALL

Poly 25, Grant 4--Jodie Soto had four hits and four RBIs and struck out six in four innings to earn a win in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Grant.

Jill Cameron had four hits and four RBIs for Poly (15-2, 9-0). Soto walked two and improved to 9-0 for Poly, which had 22 hits.

Chaminade 14, Louisville 5--First baseman Kerry Corcoran had three hits and four RBIs for Chaminade in a San Fernando Valley League game at Louisville.

Catcher Nikki Mehringer had two hits, threw out three baserunners and stole five bases for Chaminade (14-5, 5-2).

Bell-Jeff 2, St. Genevieve 1--Tammy Sanchez (8-9) pitched a four-hitter, struck out three and walked three for Bell-Jeff in the San Fernando Valley League game at Olive Park in Burbank.

Trailing, 1-0, Bell-Jeff scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a single, a stolen base and two throwing errors.

Marlene Carr singled to open the inning, stole second and went to third on Lisa Vasquez’s bunt. She scored after Vasquez was safe at first on a throwing error.

Vasquez scored when the St. Genevieve third baseman--having taken the throw back to the infield--tried to pick her off second base and threw the ball into center field.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Channel League prelims--Running on her home track, Angela Burnham of Rio Mesa had the fastest qualifying times in the 100 and 200 meters and teammates Danielle Tanner and Shannon Wiebelhaus did likewise in the 400 and 300-meter low hurdles.

Burnham, the defending state champion in the 100 and 200 meters, ran 11.94 seconds in the former and 25.26 in the latter to win her heats.

Tanner, a freshman, ran 1:00.01 to win the first heat in the 400, while Wiebelhaus clocked 47.71 to win the second heat of the 300 hurdles. The league finals will be held at Santa Barbara City College on Friday.

Marmonte League prelims--Jenni Brown of Thousand Oaks had the leading qualifying marks in the 300-meter low hurdles and the long jump at Camarillo High.

Brown, who placed fourth in the 300 hurdles at the Ventura County championships last Friday, ran a personal best of 46.7 to take the second heat in that event. She also leaped a personal best of 16 feet, 11 inches in long jump qualifying.

Other leading qualifiers were Jessica Graham of Westlake in the 800 (2:24.0), Marcia Michael of Simi Valley in the 200 (26.2), Sal Tauau of Channel Islands in the shotput (36-11) and Lori Church of Simi Valley in the 1,600 (5:26.2).

Michael, Julie Solis of Thousand Oaks and Tiffany Lammers of Westlake all ran 12.6 to win their respective heats in the 100.

The league finals will be held at Camarillo on Friday evening.

VOLLEYBALL

Chaminade d. La Salle, 15-7, 13-15, 12-15, 15-9, 15-5--Chris Bruckner had 33 kills and Tim Hayes had 16 kills and 12 blocks for Chaminade in a San Fernando Valley League match at La Salle.

Marc Miles had a school-record 77 assists for the Eagles (11-5, 6-3).

Harvard d. St. Genevieve, 15-1, 15-5, 15-9--Lloyd Rogers had nine kills and Brian Baise added seven kills for Harvard in a San Fernando Valley League match at Branford Park.

The Saracens (13-0, 9-0) are the No. 1-ranked team in the Southern Section 3-A Division poll. Granada Hills d. Birmingham 15-1, 15-3, 15-1--Sam Goldman had nine kills and three aces for the Highlanders in a nonleague sweep at Granada Hills.

Kyle Bryant added five kills for Granada Hills (11-2).

Taft d. Kennedy, 15-10, 15-11, 15-1--Matt Davis had nine kills and Gary Resnick had 47 assists for Taft in the West Valley League match at Kennedy.

The victory improved Taft’s record to 10-2 overall and 6-1 in league play. Kennedy is 2-5 in league play.

Reseda d. Sylmar, 15-7, 15-11, 5-15, 15-10--Coley Kyman had 20 kills and 10 blocks and Scott Kent had 15 kills and five blocks in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Reseda.

Bruce Sakamoto had 19 kills for Sylmar. Reseda is 11-3, 6-2.

North Hollywood d. Van Nuys, 15-8, 15-12, 7-15, 14-16, 15-7--Nestor Marroquin had 12 kills and 11 blocks for North Hollywood in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at North Hollywood.
