Section Boys’ Individual Tennis : Injury Knocks Top-Seeded Player Out of Singles Championships
There were no upsets on the court in the singles draw of the San Diego Section Boys’ Tennis Championships Wednesday, but unfortunately for top-seeded Marco Zuniga of St. Augustine, he never made it there.
Zuniga defaulted to Adrian Cordova of Bonita Vista because of a bad back. Cordova and seven seeded players advanced to the quarterfinals and semifinals today beginning at 12:45 p.m. at the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.
There were two upsets in doubles. Natahn Schaedler and John Wadleigh of Coronado, seeded eighth, lost to Chris and Rusty Tontz of the University of San Diego High School, 7-5, 6-2, and No. 7 Jay Patterson and Scott Effinger of Orange Glen lost to Kevin Berry and Chad Basinger of Poway, 6-3, 6-3.
Top-seeded Dan McKenzie and Jim Brown of La Jolla defeated Dereck Main and James Crouch of San Pasqual, 6-2, 6-4, and St. Augustine’s Pablo Zaragoza and Uliases Kyriakides, seeded No. 2, defeated Keith Bucky and Ramon Guillot of Mira Mesa, 6-3, 7-5.
Zuniga has suffered from a bad back the past several weeks and played doubles instead of singles in the section team championships in hopes of getting healthy.
Other seeded players advancing in singles included No. 2 Ignacio Martinez of St. Augustine with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Paul Dyson of La Jolla and No. 3 Jeff Miyamoto of Patrick Henry, who rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory over Hilltop’s Mike DeGuzman.
