Area Roundup : Volleyball Stars to Play Tonight at Golden West

Irvine High School’s Bev Oden and Laguna Beach’s Sean Stafford head the list of players participating in tonight’s Orange County Volleyball Coaches boys’ and girls’ all-star matches at Golden West College. The girls’ match begins at 6 p.m., the boys’ at 7:30, with both matches expected to go three games.

Oden, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker who led Irvine to back-to-back state championships, was named the state player of the year and has signed to play at Stanford. Oden will play for the girls’ South team along with Irvine teammates Melinda Norton, an outside hitter who has signed to play at Cal State San Luis Obispo, and setter Jenny Fu.

Also on the South team will be Newport Harbor setter Sienna Curci (California) and Laguna Beach outside hitter Summer Sieg (North Carolina).

The North will be led by Corona del Mar outside hitter Laurie Sawin (Stanford), Sunny Hills middle blocker Marissa Hatchett (UCLA), who is the 3-A player of the year, Huntington Beach outside hitter Kristie Ryan (UC Santa Barbara) and Esperanza setter Heidi Anderson (Florida).

Stafford, a 6-3 outside hitter recently named the Orange County boys’ player of the year by area coaches, will attend UC Santa Barbara. He will play for the boys’ South team along with Laguna Beach teammates Jonathan Cummings, a middle blocker, and John McKeown, an outside hitter. Laguna Beach was ranked No. 1 in the county during the regular season.

The North team will feature five members of Corona del Mar’s recent Southern Section championship team led by setter Ty Price, the 4-A player of the year who is considering playing at Cal State Long Beach, San Diego State and Hawaii. Also on the North team will be Huntington Beach outside hitter Scott Drake (Cal State Long Beach), the Sunset League player of the year, and Dwayne Cameron (Pepperdine), Marina’s 6-6 middle blocker.
