Bird Signs With Pirates; Briggs Signs With Twins
Pitcher David Bird, who attended Chapman College and Sonora High School, signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday. Bird, who was drafted by the Pirates in the 10th round, will report to Bradenton, Fla. He had a 10-7 record for Chapman with a 3.10 earned-run average, 125 strikeouts, 42 walks and one save.
Catcher Kenneth Briggs of Santa Ana, Bird’s teammate at Chapman, has signed with Minnesota. The Twins’ 24th pick, he has been assigned to Elizabethton, Tenn. of the Appalachian League, a rookie league.
Three Orange Coast College players were drafted. Pitcher Ed Pierce was signed by Kansas City after being drafted in the seventh round. Marty Cordova, a third baseman who hit .378 with seven home runs and 43 RBIs, was drafted by the Twins in the 10th round. And pitcher Brian McLeod was drafted by San Francisco.
