2 Marines Killed as Truck, 9 Other Vehicles Crash in Perris

Two Marines from Camp Pendleton were killed Friday afternoon when their auto was struck by a large semi-trailer truck traveling at a high rate of speed in a crash that involved 10 vehicles on Interstate 215 in the center of Perris, a Riverside county coroner’s deputy said.

A third Marine was among three people seriously injured in the pile-up, coroner’s deputy David Fortman said. California Highway Patrol officers said one man, believed to be the truck driver, was taken into custody and booked at Riverside County Jail, but there was no information on why he was being held.

Fortman said the truck, loaded with building board, was “cutting in and out of traffic” before hitting the other vehicles. The Marines’ car was the fourth one hit, Fortman said.
