Sports Briefs : Assistant Basketball Coach

Bob Braswell, basketball coach at Cleveland High School in Reseda, is expected to be named an assistant coach at Cal State Long Beach, according to Athletic Director Corey Johnson. Braswell, 27, coached Cleveland to a 76-18 record during four seasons there.

He would replace Butch Carter, who left the 49ers recently to become an assistant at the University of Dayton.

“He’s just stuck out in my mind ever since I came out from the East Coast two years ago,” said 49ers head Coach Joe Harrington.

49ers Lose Track Coach

Ralph Lindeman, track coach at Cal State Long Beach, has been named track coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Lindeman will start his new job in Colorado Springs on Aug. 1, replacing Lt. Col. Glenn Passey, who is retiring from the Air Force.

Lindeman, 37, has been men’s and women’s track and cross-country coach at Cal State Long Beach since 1984.

Walkin’ Willie’s Next Trek

William (Walkin’ Willie) Croker of Hawaiian Gardens, who in April completed his second walk across the country for cancer awareness, said he is planning to walk 750 miles through the Rocky Mountains in Colorado in October. He said he was invited to make the cancer-awareness walk by Colorado Gov. Roy Romer.

CIF Players of Year

Lakewood High School third baseman Ricardo Gutierrez has been named CIF Southern Section 5-A Player of the Year. He hit .447 and had 36 RBIs to lead Lakewood to the Moore League title. Pitcher Mark Mattingly of Cerritos was named 4-A Player of the Year. Mattingly had a 10-2 record with a 1.32 ERA and won the 4-A championship game for the Dons by defeating Hart, 4-1, at Dodger Stadium.

605 Football All-Star Game

Quarterback Greg Willig of St. Paul High School, who was The Times’ Back of the Year last season, will lead the East team in the 605 All-Star Football Game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at La Mirada High School Stadium. The West’s attack will feature Poly quarterback Michael Carter and running backs Kenneth Barnes of Dominguez and Ralph DeLatorre of El Rancho.
