HIGH LIFE: A WEEKLY FORUM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS : Journalism Contest Has Double Winner

Dawn Stone was honored as the first two-time winner in The Times’ Orange County Student Journalism Contest at an awards banquet last week.

The El Toro High School junior was the first-place winner in the feature writing competition with her story on the skinhead/white power movement in Orange County. She also won for best staff editorial, writing about the Pledge of Allegiance.

Eric Antebi and Morgan Evans of Corona del Mar High combined to write the first-place news story, a piece on homosexual speakers in the classroom in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. The award-winning sports story, written by Ewan Morrison of San Clemente High, was about Triton volleyball player Mike McGannon.

Mat Chase of Brea-Olinda High won first place in photography with his feature photo depicting gossip.

Honorable mentions were awarded to: Chris Bergerud, Dana Hills High (feature); Jenny Wrenn, Sunny Hills High (staff editorial); Matt Todrick, El Toro High (news); Lorenza Munoz, Capistrano Valley High (sports), and Brian Cummings, San Clemente High (photo).

In the best-issue categories, Corona del Mar High’s Trident and Anaheim High’s Anoranco shared first-place awards, while The Accolade of Sunny Hills High and The Centurion Scroll of Cypress High received honorable mentions.

Peter Tseng, an El Toro High senior and an avid skateboarder, won a $600 scholarship in the Citicorp Savings calendar art scholarship program with his drawing of a skateboard pro in action in an empty swimming pool. He entitled it: “Day at the Community Pool.”
