Seay Can’t Resume Long Beach Career

Mark Seay, the Cal State Long Beach wide receiver who lost a kidney when he was shot while shielding his 3-year-old niece from gunfire at a party last Halloween, won’t be playing for the 49ers next season.

Seay, who received national attention for his heroic action, was told that he will be medically ineligible by Athletic Director Corey Johnson after Johnson met with Seay’s parents, Elvin and Helen Seay, and Robert Austin, the team physician.

Before he was shot, Seay caught 31 passes for 480 yards during his sophomore season. After recuperating at his parents’ home in San Bernardino, Seay returned to classes in the spring semester.

“(Football) means so much to him,” Coach Larry Reisbig said. “He’s taking it hard.”
