ON THE SIDELINES : Montes Keeps Title With Knockout
John Montes defended his California junior welterweight title with a third-round knockout over Kenny Comer in their scheduled 12-round state title bout Wednesday night at the Hollywood Palladium.
The 140-pound Montes, of Anaheim, hit Comer, 139 pounds, with a strong left hook and followed with combinations to the head and body before referee Kenny Davis stopped the fight at 2:30 of the third round. Montes raised his record to 44-5, 30 wins by knockout.
In San Diego, Ysaias Zamudio of Blythe won a 12-round unanimous decision over Martin Cardenas of Tijuana Wednesday night to retain the World Boxing Assn. America’s flyweight championship.
In another title bout, Tim Williams of San Diego defended his California middleweight title for the third time with a 12-round majority decision over Roberto Rosiles of Blythe.
