AT BOOKSTORES JUST for children, the salespeople almost always seem to match the young reader or befuddled adult with the right book. Many children’s bookstores sponsor special events, most of which are free. Childrens’ authors are regular visitors; many will read to the children or act out part of their work, and all are willing to autograph books.

On Saturday mornings, storytellers at Pages in Tarzana read to children ages 3 to 8, sometimes incorporating craft projects related to the stories. On the first and third Wednesday of each month, a story time for younger children is offered, along with music and singing.

Adventures for Kids in Ventura has offered its Tuesday-morning story hour for 11 years. Recently it added a monthly family night for the convenience of working parents. At the White Rabbit in La Jolla, Wednesday morning is story time for 2- and 3-year-olds. Older children can join in special workshops, such as rubber-stamp art or origami; parents are invited to evening seminars on choosing books for children. Children’s summer writing workshops are offered as well.

Those age 5 to 8 are invited to listen in Saturday morning. Most children’s bookstores will send out newsletters that keep parents informed about recommended books.
