Sockers Sign Kevin Crow to One-Year Contract

The Sockers Tuesday announced the signing of Kevin Crow, a three-time Major Indoor Soccer League defender of the year, to a one-year contract.

The Sockers’ second-round draft choice in 1983 from San Diego State, Crow was named the MISL’s best defender in 1985, 1988 and 1989 and is a four-time league all-star.

During the 1988-89 MISL season, Crow had 21 goals and 15 assists for 36 points (all career highs). Crow also finished the season with club records of 114 blocked shots for the season and 10 in the last regular-season game against Tacoma.

GOLF

Three San Diego-area golfers qualified for the United States Golf Assn. Women’s Amateur national tournament by finishing among the top eight in regional qualifying at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club.

Elizabeth Bowman of Bonita and Wendy Modic of Chula Vista both shot a 71, tying for the top spot. Ruby Burks of National City was eighth to qualify with a 77.

Among the four golfers qualifying as alternates was Mildred Stanley of Escondido with an 81.

The national tournament will begin July 31 in Pinehurst, N.C..

FOOTBALL

The Chargers have moved a scrimmage against the Los Angeles Rams from Thursday, July 27, to Sunday, July 30, at 2 p.m. at their training camp at UC San Diego.

Newly graduated seniors from San Diego County and Los Angeles County CIF section high schools will play in the 1989 Southern California College Prep All-Star Football Classic Aug. 5 at Torrey Pines High School Stadium.

The San Diego team has won the past two years since the series was resumed in 1987.

Photo day and pre-game workouts for the San Diego team will begin at noon on July 24 under the co-head coaches, Rik Haines of Torrey Pines High and father Dick Haines of Vista High.
