Cook Undergoes Knee Surgery After Injury in All-Star Game

Wayne Cook, a quarterback from Newbury Park High who has signed with UCLA, underwent knee surgery Sunday and will be sidelined two to three months, according to his father, Ken Cook. Wayne suffered a torn ligament in his right knee Friday during the Daily News’ all-star football game.

The injury seemed minor at the time. Cook (6-foot-4, 185 pounds) had his knee taped on the sideline and was prepared to reenter the game but was not needed. An examination Saturday revealed the damage.

Cook, who starred in football, basketball and baseball at Newbury Park, missed three games last football season because of a broken thumb on his right hand.

He completed 91 of 189 passes for 1,197 yards and eight touchdowns in seven games.

He will report to UCLA’s first practice Aug. 14 and will redshirt his freshman year.

Greg Sheets, a pole vaulter and recent graduate of Taft High, will attend Cornell in the fall.

Sheets, who tied for fourth in the pole vault in the high school state championships in June, chose Cornell over USC, UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine because of the Ivy League school’s hotel administration department.

“Cornell was my number-one choice all along,” Sheets said. “And when they accepted me into their hotel administration major, that settled it.”

Although Ivy League schools do not offer athletic scholarships, Sheets will continue to pole vault at the Ithaca, N. Y. campus.

Sheets, runner-up in the past two City Section championships, has vaulted 15 feet, 1 inch.
