2 Killed, 5 Wounded in Gang Violence
Gang gunmen who approached their victims on foot instead of the usual slow-moving car killed two rivals and wounded five in two unrelated attacks within 20 minutes of each other on South Los Angeles streets, police said Friday.
The first attack occurred about 8:30 p.m. Thursday as a group of people stood talking near the intersection of 74th Street and Broadway, Lt. Bob Kimball said.
One or more gunmen walked up and began firing, hitting four people. One, Alonzo Williams, 26, died soon after at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center.
Three people in their mid-20s, including a woman, were hospitalized. All were believed to be gang members. None was identified.
In the second attack, about 20 minutes later on West Vernon Avenue, a gunman walked up to a group of people, opened fire and then ran away. One of the three people hit, Troy Shaw, 20, a gang member, died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Detective Patrick Marshall said.
Two men, one 19 years old and the other 36, were wounded.
Kimball said the attacks involved separate gangs and were not related.
