Sockers Sign Fernandez, Karic Again

The Sockers Tuesday announced the signing of two players from last season’s MISL championship team.

Forward Zoran Karic, who led the club with 37 goals, and George Fernandez, whose 89 blocked shots was second on the team, agreed to terms.

The Sockers now have agreements with eight players off last year’s team, also including midfielders Rene Ortiz, Brian Quinn and Branko Segota, goalkeepers Victor Nogueira and Zoltan Toth and defender Kevin Crow .

One player from last year’s roster, midfielder Paul Dougherty, has signed with runner-up Baltimore.

GOLF

Susan Pankau of Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club and Polly Hartley went to the wire in the Fred Sherman’s women’s golf tournament before Pankau finally pulled out a one-stroke victory on the last hole at Escondido Country Club.

Pankau, 18, won the championship with a two-day score of 72-75--147. Hartley, from El Camino Country Club, finished at 75-73--148.

Roger Gunn will defend his Buie San Diego County Open men’s title when 180 professionals and amateurs tee off today in the 54-hole tournament at Torrey Pines Golf Course.

Gunn shot a nine-under 63 in winning last year’s tournament by two strokes over Howie Johnson. First prize is $4,500 with $3,250 for second. Tee time is 6:45 a.m.

FOOTBALL

The San Diego State football team has awarded scholarships to two more players, freshman Mark Koenig from La Mirada High School and junior Merten Harris from College of the Desert. Koenig is a 6-foot-5, 225-pound lineman who played both offense and defense in earning all-CIF honors last year. Harris, 5-11, 180, will play cornerback for the Aztecs although he was a option quarterback at College of the Desert.

DIVING

Kristen Walls, former section diving champion from Monte Vista High, won the one-meter springboard title in the Junior Olympic Zone D championships. Walls qualified for the national meet Aug. 8-13 at The Woodlands, Tex. She earlier qualified in the three-meter and platform events.
