Magley Prevails in Street Stock Main at Ventura

Nick Magley of Ventura grabbed an early lead and outlasted 17 other drivers to win the 20-lap Mini Stock main event at Ventura Raceway on Friday night.

Magley, who won his first main event of the season, took the lead for good on the third lap after Jim Jewett of Oxnard headed toward the pits with engine trouble. It was an all-Ventura finish as Marty Desbrow and Bill Floyd took second and third.

Don Keeter of Ventura went wire to wire to win the 15-lap Street Stock oval track main event. Jeff Bosley of Camarillo took second and Lynn Brader of Somis finished third.

Charles Utts of Camarillo, the Street Stock points leader, left the race on Lap 3 with a flat right-front tire and did not return.

In the figure-8 Street Stock main event, Bosley increased his lead over Jim Firsich of Port Hueneme in the points standings. Len Linse of Pacoima finished second in his first appearance at the track and Firsich placed third.

Rock Ake Jr. of Moorpark, the series points leader, easily won the Mini Stock figure-8 main event. The win was the eighth of the season for Ake, equaling the number of victories by Gary Curtis of Camarillo. Richard Webster of Camarillo took second and Curtis finished third.

Patrick Davis of Port Hueneme won his first Mini Stock heat race of the season. Jewett won the other Mini Stock heat race.

Mike Johannes of Van Nuys easily won a Street Stock eight-lap race for his second victory of the season. Ventura’s Pete Marcus posted his second consecutive heat-race victory in the next race.

Trophy-dash winners were Ake (Mini Stock) and Utts (Street Stock). The victory was Utts’ seventh of the season.

The fastest qualifying times were posted by Floyd in the Mini Stock division at 17.15 and Utts in the Street Stock division at 16.77

Racing takes a three-week break during the Ventura County Fair. The full racing program will resume Sept. 1.
