Miami Eases Policy on Proposition 48

MIAMI — The Miami Hurricanes will allow a freshman who has failed to meet academic requirements set under Proposition 48 guidelines to enter school this year, a departure from last year’s policy of not taking such athletes.
Horace Copeland, a receiver from Orlando Evans High School, will report to school Wednesday with 21 other freshmen. He will not be allowed to play or practice with the team this season and will lose one year of eligibility.
Former Hurricane coach Jimmy Johnson started the policy of not allowing any Proposition 48 nonqualifiers on the team because of a history of poor performance on and off the field by those athletes.
