Four Juniors Advance in Tennis Tournaments

Four San Diego tennis players won their matches Tuesday in junior national tournaments.

Scott Lippitt was the only one of three San Diego boys to win his second-round match in the 12-and-under tennis championships at Morley Field.

Lippitt, of Rancho Santa Fe, advanced to today’s round by defeating Shane Sabel of Evansville, Ind., 6-1, 6-1.

John Chanfreau of El Cajon lost to Jan-Micheal Gambill of Spokane, Wash., 6-4, 6-0. Justin Phillips of Rancho Santa Fe lost to Shawn Thomas of Charlotte, N.C., 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

At the girls’ 18 championships in Memphis, Tenn., Angelica Gavaldon of Coronado defeated Michelle Dodds of Fairfax, Va., 6-1, 6-1.

At the boys’ 14 championships in Shreveport, La., James Conda of San Diego advanced by defeating David Kloberdanz of Oklahoma City, 6-1, 6-2.

At the girls’ 14 championships in Atlanta, Nicole Elliot of San Diego defeated Carter Lackey of McLean, Va., 6-3, 6-2.

SAILING

Dave Curtis of Marblehead, Mass., is tied for first after the fourth race of the six-race series of the International Etchells World Championship regatta off Point Loma. Curtis, who placed fifth in the fourth race, is tied for first with Don Jesberg of San Francisco.

Jim Buckingham of Newport Beach won the fourth race and is in sixth overall. Larry Klein of San Diego placed second in the fourth race and is third in the series. Bruce Nelson, also of San Diego, is in fourth place overall. The fifth race begins at noon today, with the series concluding Thursday.

BASEBALL

Jake Molina, University of San Diego’s assistant baseball coach, was named coach of Spain’s national baseball team. Molina, who has been USD’s assistant coach for four years, organized the Spanish Junior Olympics program in Barcelona in 1988.
