Seeded Players Knocked Out of Boys’ 12s

Two seeded players were eliminated and another defaulted in the fourth round of the USTA Boys’ 12s national tennis tournament at Morley Field Thursday.

Trip Phillips of Midlothian, Tenn., upset Corey Guy of Portola Valley, seeded sixth, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4, and Raphael Jordan of Puerto Rico defeated Marc Urbainczyk of Lake Mary, Fla., the seeded eighth, 6-1, 7-5 to advance to today’s quarterfinals.

Ramin Pejan of West Vancouver, B.C., seeded seventh, defaulted because of illness.

TRACK AND FIELD

The deadline to raise $150,000 to save the San Diego State track and field program for this upcoming season has been extended to Aug. 22 by Athletic Director Fred Miller.

Track and field was cut June 20 by Miller to save the athletic department $225,000.

Walter Turner, who is heading an effort to raise the necessary funds, said that the group needs another $20,000 before private parties will underwrite the balance needed to reach $150,000. Approximately $115,000 has been raised.

JUNIOR OLYMPICS

Kristen Walls of San Diego finished fifth in the girls’ 16-18 three-meter diving at the Junior Olympics in Houston, Tex.

Walls, who graduated from Monte Vista, will compete at UCLA next season. She will compete in her specialty, the one-meter event, today.

In synchronized swimming, Laurie McClelland of Spring Valley was second in the girls’ 13-14 solo, and Emily Marsh and Julie Taylor of Spring Valley were fourth in the 13-14 duet.

GOLF

Liz Bowman of Bonita is tied for eighth after the second round of the Betsy Rawls Girls Junior Championships at the Hercules Country Club in Wilmington, Del. Bowman shot an eight-over par 80 and is nine shots behind leader Tonya Blosser of Athens, Ohio.
