Platt Says He’s Done With Aztecs

Quarterback Brad Platt confirmed Friday that he would not return for his final football season at San Diego State.

“I’m not really happy with football anymore,” Platt said. “It had nothing to do with the quarterback situation there.”

He added, “My school’s very important to me right now. It was a very difficult decision to make.”

After starting seven games last season and throwing for 1,466 yards, Platt, a fifth-year senior from Hilltop High School and Southwestern College, lost a spring battle with Dan McGwire for the No. 1 quarterback job. Coach Al Luginbill said Platt and freshmen quarterbacks Cree Morris and David Lowery would contend for the No. 2 spot this fall.

Platt said he felt he had been treated fairly by Luginbill and that he had no animosity toward him or anybody associated with the football program.

Platt informed Luginbill of his decision Wednesday night and met again with the first-year coach Friday morning. Luginbill had hoped Platt would reconsider and gave him until this morning to change his mind.

“He’s a fifth-year senior with three months left,” Luginbill said. “He’s invested so much time in the program. I respect every player’s right to play or not to play.

“It’s been such a whirlwind experience. I just want it cleared up before we start practice.”

Luginbill also said that because Platt is not returning, neither Morris nor Lowery would be red-shirted.
