Bob Graff, a senior defensive end for the San Diego State football team, strained a tendon in his right knee and will be out of practice indefinitely, team trainer Brian Barry said.

His injury is similar to the one Steve Blyth suffered in the spring, although Blyth’s was a rupture that required surgery; Graff’s injury is less severe. Coach Al Luginbill said he hopes to have Graff ready for the team’s first game Sept. 2 at Air Force.

Other Aztecs who will be held out of today’s first full-gear practice are receiver Patrick Rowe and offensive lineman Carlson Leomiti, Bonner Montler, Mike Alexander and Blyth.

Barry said Rowe has an irritation in his right knee and will be out for about a week. Leomiti (inflamed Achilles) is out seven to 10 days, as is Alexander (hip flexor strain). Barry added that Blyth and Montler (two broken toes on left foot) are improving daily, but it is not known when they will return.

Luginbill released the team from Tuesday’s second practice 15 minutes early, bypassing the normal conditioning segment. “They have really worked hard on that aspect of the game,” he said. “You’ll see that now and again, because we practice very hard.”
