Pilot Wins Chase to Take Regatta

Phil Chase of the California Yacht Club piloted Sea Chase to a first-place finish in Sunday’s final of the Pacific Class National regatta on San Diego Bay.

The San Diego Yacht Club took six of the next nine places, including second-place Onion Truck, skippered by Morgan Miller and Bud Caldwell, and third-place Confusion with Peter Peckham at the helm.

La Cucaracha from the South Bay Yacht Club was fourth with captains Alex Van Wetter and Patrick Nagle.

TENNIS

Chris Numbers of El Cajon won the consolation final of the United States Tennis Assn. Boys’ International Grass Court championships in Philadelphia. Numbers defeated Jon Leach of Laguna Beach, 6-4, 6-4.

SWIMMING

Lars Jorgenson, the 1988 San Diego Section swimmer of the year from Mt. Carmel High, finished second in 15 minutes 14.45 seconds in the 1,500 freestyle at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Tokyo. Glen Housman of Australia won in a meet record 15:06.00.

TRACK AND FIELD

Former Olympian and San Diego State standout Ramona Pagel finished sixth in the shotput with a throw of 60-feet-11 1/4 in the Weltklasse Mobil Grand Prix in Cologne, West Germany. Natalia Lisovskaya of the Soviet Union won at 67-3 1/4.
