THE SIDELINES : Braves Manager Nixon to Be Rehired
Atlanta Braves Manager Russ Nixon and his entire staff of coaches will be rehired for the 1990 season, General Manager Bobby Cox said Tuesday night.
Cox said, however, that he will not discuss a new contract with Nixon until after the season ends Oct. 1, in accordance with club policy. Nixon’s current contract is for $165,000.
Cox met with Nixon and his staff before Tuesday night’s 10-5 loss to St. Louis and told them that they will be retained.
Nixon, hired to replace Chuck Tanner in May of 1988, said: “It’s a relief--to my family, to me, to my coaches. I’m quite happy with it. I just wish we could have done better.”
The Braves are currently 50-75, 21 1/2 games behind the San Francisco Giants in the National League West, but seven games better than their record of a year ago at the same time.
