UCSD Teams Sweep in Cross-Country at Fullerton

The UC San Diego men’s and women’s cross-country teams each finished first in college division races at the Cal State Fullerton Invitational.
Leading the UCSD men was Merrel Hora, first in 25:34 for eight kilometers, and Roger Webb, second in 26:16. The men scored 21 points to finish ahead of Long Beach City College (47) and Biola (154).
The UCSD women took the top three spots: Denise McFayden (18:36 for five kilometers), Michelle Conlay (18:40) and Sabrina Jensen (19:16). The women scored 21, ahead of Azusa Pacific (66) and Biola (70).
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
UC Santa Barbara defeated San Diego State, 15-11, 15-8, 8-15, 15-5, in the semifinals of the Cal State Fullerton tournament. UCSB had already defeated the Aztecs (5-5) at the ASICS tournament at SDSU a week ago.
UC San Diego lost both its matches and was eliminated from the Western Invitational tournament at UC Davis.
UCSD, ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III, was defeated, 15-6, 15-0, by defending tournament champion Hawaii-Pacific. Cal State Northridge, a NCAA Division II team, eliminated the Tritons (4-4), 15-1, 15-5. Diana Klintworth had 12 kills for UCSD in the two matches.
MEN’S SOCCER
Cal State Dominguez defeated USIU, 1-0, in the USIU tournament. Willie Ayala scored the lone goal in the 73rd minute. Dominguez is 3-1, USIU 0-2.
USIU plays California today at 2 p.m.
WATER POLO
UC San Diego defeated Air Force, 10-9, in overtime to finish third at the UC Santa Barbara tournament. Jason Brown had four goals for UCSD (4-1). The Tritons lost, 10-6, to the host Gauchos in the semifinals earlier.
SURFING
Mike Lambresi of Oceanside, the two-time defending U.S. surfing champion, was eliminated in the fifth round of the $100,000 Body Glove Surf Bout at San Onofre.
Lambresi lost to Chris Gallagher of Santa Cruz and Shane Beschen of San Clemente.
The quarterfinals start today at 8 a.m. at Lower Trestles. First place is worth $30,000.
