A pair of football teams with nowhere to go but up meet at Victor Valley High School at 7 p.m. Saturday when Harbor College opens its season against host Victor Valley College. The Seahawks, 3-16-1 over the last two seasons, have a new head coach, Don Weems. Victor Valley defeated West Los Angeles College, 21-3, last week in its first game. Another victory would equal its win total for all of 1988. The Rams were 2-8 a year ago, Harbor 1-10.

The Eastview Little League of San Pedro needs $1.5 million to relocate its fields across the street from its present location near the DiCarlo Bakery. According to Gary Miley, Eastview president, the league has secured rights to move its fields onto elevated land overlooking its present site at the corner of Gaffey and Capitol, but the cost of the move is more than the league has in its coffers.

The lease with DiCarlo “is on a year-to-year basis,” said Miley, who indicated that a move would be in the best interest of all concerned. Eastview, which advanced to the Little League World Series in August, offers play from T-Ball all the way to Senior League for youngsters in their first few years in high school. Contributions for the moving fund can be made by contacting Miley at 833-1510.

Marcus Mallett of Gardena, looking like an also-ran a month ago, has vaulted back into contention for the overall points lead of the NASCAR Racing Series as the pro stock car season continues its stretch run at Ascot Raceway. Mallett, twice a runner-up to Ron Meyer of Anaheim for the points title, could grab the top spot away from Meyer on Sunday evening with a victory and a little luck. Action begins at 6.

With two races left, Mallett needs two top-two finishes, and Meyer would have to withdraw from at least one. Also racing Sunday will be bomber ovals, hobby stocks and Figure 8s, where multitalented Mike Kirby of Long Beach will be shooting for his eighth victory of the season.

In the pro stocks, Mallett, who suffered a midsummer’s nightmare of six consecutive bad races, kicked off a comeback by winning a double point event Aug. 27, leading Meyer wire to wire. In a Labor Day holiday meeting, Mallett finished second, and Meyer had machine shop problems, losing two cars on the same night.

“It’s a dogfight,” Mallett said. “He’s sweating bullets. I ain’t.” Other events on tap at Ascot this weekend include four-wheelers in the South Bay Stadium tonight at 7, CMC Motocross tonight at 7:30 on the main track, and the continuation of the CRA sprint car series Saturday at 8 p.m.
