In another game:
L.A. Southwest 28, Pierce 7--After his team’s strong running game was stymied for the first quarter, L. A. Southwest College Coach Henry Washington went to the air and the Cougars breezed past visiting Pierce.
Southwest freshman quarterback Craig Manigo threw four touchdown passes, two to wide receiver Ansel Littlejohn, as the state’s 14th-ranked team improved to 4-0-1 overall, 3-0-1 in the Western State Conference.
Littlejohn scored on a 52-yard pass from Manigo on the first play of the second quarter, accounting for the 7-0 halftime lead.
The Brahmas (1-4, 0-4) stayed close in the first half by shutting down the Cougars’ running attack. Washington credited the game plan of Pierce Coach Bob Enger for stopping the Cougars in the early going.
“Pierce was stacking (its line) for our running game,” Washington said. “We finally got smart and went to our other strengths. We loosened Pierce up with the pass, and that got us going.”
The Cougars moved quickly in the third quarter, getting their second Manigo-to-Littlejohn touchdown on a 28-yard pass play little more than two minutes into the half. Manigo threw another touchdown pass 32 seconds later, this time one of 20 yards to Donovan Johnson. That came after Brahma quarterback Jamie Grossman fumbled after a 12-yard gain on a pass from running back Louis Vann.
Manigo, who completed 14 of 19 for 223 yards, put it out of reach with a 30-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Donald Turner late in the third quarter.
