HIGH SCHOOL CROSS-COUNTRY : Quartz Hill, Canyon Repeat as Champions

The Canyon High boys’ cross-country team claimed its third consecutive Golden League title and the Quartz Hill girls’ team won its second in a row in the league championships Wednesday at College of the Canyons.

The Cowboys, ranked second behind Camarillo in the Southern Section 4-A Division, placed all five of their scorers among the top six finishers to total 17 points. Antelope Valley (60) and Quartz Hill (77) finished second and third.

All three teams will advance to the 4-A preliminaries, to be held Nov. 11 at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Canyon was paced by junior Dave Hartman, who timed 16 minutes, three seconds over the three-mile course to win his second individual title in as many years.

Seniors Dan Berkeland (16:39), John Serrano (17:31), Lee Cohen (17:52) and Manny DeLeon (17:59) finished second, third, fifth and sixth, respectively, for the Cowboys.

Quartz Hill runners took five of the top nine positions in the girls’ final to finish with 29 points. Canyon (55) and Ridgecrest Burroughs (70) were second and third, also qualifying for the 4-A preliminaries.

The Rebels were led by the second- and third-place finishes of junior Helen Holbrook (21:32) and sophomore Teresa Santana (22:26).

Sophomore Robin Heidt of Canyon won the race in 20:45.
