It has been a long time between smiles for Bruce Snyder, but the California coach was beaming Saturday after quarterback Troy Taylor rallied the Bears to a 29-28 upset of 15th-ranked Arizona at Berkeley.

“There has been a lot of pain, frustration and anxiety this season, and it’s so nice to see people smiling and happy,” Snyder said.

The visiting Wildcats led 21-0 and 28-10, but saw their hopes of a Pacific 10 championship fade with Cal’s comeback victory.

It was the second consecutive year that Cal has knocked off Arizona after previously going winless in the Pac-10.

Taylor, also the hero in last year’s 10-7 victory over Arizona, has been struggling through an injury-filled season, but against the Wildcats he threw for a career-high 372 yards and two touchdowns, both to Michael Smith.

Taylor’s passes of 24 yards to Smith, 12 to Mike Ford and 15 to Brent Woodall keyed the Bears’ 83-yard winning drive. Greg Zomalt, a freshman reserve tailback, ran the final six yards untouched with 8:56 to play.

Cal is 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the Pac-10. The Wildcats are 6-3 and 4-2.

Taylor completed 28 of 44 passes and became Cal’s all-time passing leader, overtaking Rich Campbell.

Arizona State 34, Washington 32--Paul Justin completed 18 of 36 passes for 339 yards and three touchdowns as the Sun Devils won a Pac-10 game at Seattle.

Arizona State (5-3-1 and 2-2-1) capitalized on six Washington turnovers. Five were by quarterback Cary Conklin--three interceptions and two fumbles. The Sun Devils also sacked Conklin five times for losses totaling 46 yards.

Conklin was 28 for 42 for 428 yards and three touchdowns.

The Huskies, who had won three in a row, are 5-4 and 3-3.

Justin passed for his three touchdowns in the first half, and Arizona State broke a 24-24 tie to take a 34-24 lead with 6:40 left.

Conklin’s 36-yard touchdown pass to Andre Riley and a two-point conversion pass to tight end Bill Ames got Washington to within two points with 1:08 left.
